Alongside Shane Heneghan, best known as DJ Model, Downes formed Liquid in the early 90s.

The duo who would help to amplify the early sounds of rave and breakbeat in the UK.

Fellow DJ and producer Billy Daniel Bunter shared the news earlier today, writing: "It's with heartbreaking sadness that I'm letting the world know we've lost Eamon Downes, devoted husband to Stella, proud dad to Bea, and one of my closest friends ever.

"This one really hurts."

Bunter added: "I still remember him playing me 'Sweet Harmony' down the phone before it got cut.

"When XL signed it, he was buzzing.

"Sending dubplates by bike to Pete Tong and then straight to me at Labrynth, he loved that side of things."

Downes and Heneghan found success with their debut self-titled record in 1991, of which the track 'Sweet Harmony' stands as an all-timer anthem.

Initially released in 1991 on the self-pressed white label Liquid EP of 500 copies, it was re-released to a wider audience on XL Recordings.

It's success would also emboldened XL Recordings, which has become one of the planet's most important labels.

The single was followed by The Future Music EP which included "Liquid Is Liquid".

After their first few releases, Downes and Heneghan parted ways as a duo.

But Downes continued to share music under the alias for more than 30 years as a solo act.

Tributes from fans have poured in for the star after news of his death broke.

One wrote: "Sweet Harmony got me through so many tough times… RIP."

Another said: "Absolutely gutted to see this."

A third commented: "Sorry to hear this sad news. Cherish the memories with Eamon his music touched a lot of people."
