THE WIFE of Weezer bassist Scott Shriner has been granted a mental health diversion program after being accused of opening fire on police officers during a chaotic manhunt in her neighborhood.

Jillian Shriner, 52, was ruled "eligible and suitable" for a two-year mental health diversion, a deal that could see her felony charges dismissed if she completes treatment.

"If she successfully completes the conditions of the diversion, the case will be dismissed by the court," the LA County District Attorney's office told NBC 4.

The bizarre incident unfolded in April in Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, as police searched for three suspects who fled a multi-car crash on the freeway.

As officers combed through the neighborhood, they said they spotted Jillian – also known by her maiden name Jillian Lauren – standing outside her home holding a handgun.

Police claimed she refused "numerous" commands to drop the weapon before opening fire.

She was shot in the shoulder by an LAPD officer and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Jillian told police she had armed herself after learning the three suspects were on the run nearby, according to CBS News.

No officers were injured.

Footage later showed a barefoot Jillian sprawled on the ground as officers handcuffed her before leading her to a police car.

She was later booked on attempted murder charges and released after posting a $1 million bail bond, reports The New York Times.

Police searched the Shriner home and recovered a 9-millimeter handgun.

Jillian and the family's babysitter, who was also taken into custody during the standoff, were later released, KTLA reports.

The following day, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner was spotted casually walking his dogs outside their Los Angeles home and gave a strange response when asked about his wife's arrest.

The 59-year-old rocker told the New York Post: "See you at Coachella," after saying his wife was "alright."

Scott and Jillian married in 2005 and share two adopted children.

As part of the diversion program, LA County Superior Court Judge Susan De Witt ordered Jillian to abstain from drugs and alcohol, continue weekly therapy sessions, undergo random testing, and attend at least three Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week.

She is also barred from owning or possessing any guns or knives.

The DA's office stressed that "any violation" could terminate the program, sending her back to court.

Shriner is scheduled to return to court on January 9 to report her progress.

The confrontation with police came as chaos unfolded in Eagle Rock after a freeway crash involving three men who fled on foot.

One was bleeding from his head, mouth, and knees when he was spotted by locals.

Alana Altmeyer and her brother Guy Binn told KTLA: "I saw a gentleman walking on the shoulder. So my brother and I went over and assumed that he was leaving the scene of an accident. He was bleeding from his head, his mouth and his knees."

The suspect bolted down a steep bank, stripped to his underwear, and tried to hide in a swimming pool as police set up a perimeter.

During the search, officers ran past the Shriners' home – moments before Jillian allegedly pointed her gun at them, triggering the standoff.

Outside of her marriage to the Weezer bassist, Jillian is a successful author of several bestselling nonfiction books.

Weezer – known for hits like Say It Ain't So – first formed in 1992 and features frontman Rivers Cuomo, drummer Patrick Wilson, rhythm guitarist Brian Bell, and Scott Shriner on bass.

The band has one sold-out UK show scheduled this year in London.
