COCO Chanel once said: "If you're sad add more lipstick, and attack".

Words heeded by Victoria Beckham, it seems, after the designer enjoyed a record-breaking year thanks, in part, to sales of her Posh lipstick.

The former Spice Girl's £37 lippy, plus her signature kohl eyeliners and fragrances, have helped deliver her eponymous company  a revenue of almost £113million.

Victoria Beckham Holdings has grown 22% in 12 months, with the designer's "affordable" beauty line largely to thank for record profits.

It marks an incredible turnaround for Chanel-fan Victoria, 51, who was previously mocked by bitchy fashionistas, and who once had to borrow £30mn from her husband's company.

Today, one of her signature kohl eyeliners sells every thirty seconds in the UK, the Princess of Wales wears her clothes and she has been touted as a possible successor to Anna Wintour at Vogue.

Last night a source said: "Victoria and her brand are flying – she and the team are utterly thrilled with these latest financial accounts.

"Her beauty brand, which has given 'regular' people a taste of the high-end VB product with its accessible price points, is going from strength from strength. Her Posh lipstick is a big hitter, and at £37 it's proven an affordable treat for many.

"A big turning point came when Victoria brought herself back as the face of the brand, doing online make-up tutorials on Instagram, and making it super-personal – showing fans how to recreate her signature smokey eye, for example.

"She is a constant innovator, and several hero products – like her concealer – have received rave reviews from beauty editors across the board.

"Accessories have also been a big hitter this year – her Dorian bag and clutch chains have become desirable must-haves for the cognoscenti.

"A-listers continue to wear her dresses and despite her Posh moniker, she successfully straddles all demographics… which not many designers can say.

"It's been a stellar year for Victoria, and it really is quite a gratifying two fingers up to her those naysayers."

Certainly it marks quite the turnaround for the mum of four since she first announced plans to branch out into fashion in 2009.

Then, she was widely pilloried by the snooty fashion set with designers including Tom Ford and the late John Galliano and Alexander McQueen reportedly quick to dismiss her.

The business also spent many years in the red with detractors claiming it was only her husband's money propping her up.

However, the designer – now worth half a billion pounds alongside former England captain Becks – refused to give in.

Everyone from Meghan Markle to Michelle Obama and Daisy Edgar Jones have worn her designs, and her videos – at times self-deprecating – on social media have won her a legion of new fans.

Her beauty page alone has £1.3mn followers and last week daughter Harper, 14, gave her own tutorial using some of her mum's "hero" products.

In October Netflix is airing a documentary series detailing Posh's rise from pop star to global fashion icon.
